As admin, how to see users' home directories in windows

I need to copy all my users’ files from old NAS to UGreen NAS.

However when I log in as admin, I don’t see their home directories.

On Synology you have /home and /homes, one being the link to your home, and the other confusingly being the link to /home

However it works.

I have searched online, and chatted for 45 minutes to 3 different AI to try to find any setting for this, however they can’t find it…

There is a box called full rights, which on hover says “once enabled by the current user, my personal files will be hidden from others."

However a) I am admin, and b) they are all unchecked, and c) why does the button say full rights yet checking it would disable full rights…

I am baffled by so many things in this NAS….

Also, this is so clearly an “all your base are belong to us” product!

I had an error message on the system that said “You are shut down soon, deal with it timely”

And on the ugreen support ticket system, it said (on submission), “we will contact you by email, please pay attention to it.”

They should be under /home and then whatever you named the users when you created them. They’re the ones under User Folder in the file manager in Ugos.

As always with moving to a new platform/OS/program, there’s a learning curve to figure out the quirks. Is Ugos the best NAS OS out there? No, but it’s pretty easy to work once you’ve figured out the little quirks and I would say it’s much better than Asustor’s ASM. I also prefer it compared to TerraMaster’s TOS. I haven’t use a recent Synology device, so I can’t really compare with that and the most recent QNAP device I used, had their older OS with an antiquated kernel.

Plenty of translation issues with the UI/UX, but then again, the Taiwanese NAS makers aren’t the best at English either, I should know, I worked for QNAP for a while, many years ago.

Yes, so on the command line on the device, they are all under /home/dave or /home/bob

However what I need to do is get to either of those, in windows, when logged in as admin.

On Synology that is done as \\NAS\homes\bob for example.

However I can’t see how to browser everything on the NAS in windows explorer as admin…

I wrote here as generally forums are more active and enthusiastic and useful than tech support!

However I have also reached out to their support.

The website says “chat 24x7”, which links to a bot, that asks me what website I am visiting (it should know), and then anything at all I type after that it says it cannot understand, and I should pick from the following options, of which there are none…

So I raised a ticket via email, let’s see if anything comes of it. I got an auto reply already - which was in Italian… so it’s been pretty strange trip on the ugreen bus so far!

That’s easy it’s \\NAS_name\personal_folder and it’s tied to the username you log in with on that computer. And yes, it shows up as personal_folder in Windows.

As per your example, Dave would only be able to access Dave’s personal folder and Bob would only be able to access Bob’s personal folder. Just because Dave has admin rights, doesn’t give him access to Bob’s personal folder outside of login in to the web UI of the NAS.

As I said, quirks of using a new/different platform, where someone made a decision to do things a certain way, because reasons.

Right but Dave the admin user needs to get into Bob’s folder, because that’s what admins can do. The admin can get everything from the UI anyway, so it’s not “private” anyway….

I don’t know any linux platform where this is normal.

Also, how to support users, ensure backups are working etc etc..

I guess I will have to create a shared folder named after each person, and then give them and admin the rights to that folder. Seems overly convoluted.

I have worked with almost every type of system over the last 35 years and this is not what I expected.

Thanks very much for your support and responses, I really do appreciate it!

Cheers, Dave

You’ll have to use the file manager in Ugos, at least for now.

An Admin in Ugos is clearly not the same as an Admin on a regular Linux OS.

Doing what you’re planning on doing is going to be messy and as the user folders are tied to the mobile app as well, you might run in to some weird issues if you use that. The user folders are also tied with personal folder, so your new shares will just be normal shared folder. I obviously don’t work for Ugreen and I have no idea why they did what they did, but it’s one of many quirks with Ugos.

Oh and just so you’re aware, since we’re talking a very different way of doing things and this threw me as well, apps you install via the App Center on the NAS, shows up in the mobile app and this is how you access features like backup or photos on your phone, rather than installing yet another app. It’s nice that you only have to use one app, but very confusing at first.

Anyhow, glad I could help, even if it wasn’t the answer you wanted.
