Moving hard drives between Ugreen NAS devices without losing data

Moving hard drives between NAS devices without losing data. I have two 4 bay UGREEN NAS boxes the DXP4800+ and the DH4300+. Can I move hard drives between the two without losing the data/structures? I think the answer is no just because I can’t find anything in the ugreen documentation about his but wanted to check before I reformat the drives in the other device.

I did ask that question on the official forums and the answer is, sort of.

You can find a guide over in the Ugreen site. It’s not as simple as with other brands, since you can’t migrate the OS along with everything else, since the OS is on a separate drive. Let us know how you got on with it.

Note that all links to their site comes up in simplified chinese for some reason, but the page is in English.

Hi, thanks - that s great. I didn’t find that in my searching. It worked for me! I had backed everything up but it was great being able to restore the data and have the raid structure reappear. I followed the instructions. There was an additional set of questions that appeared about ssd storage “please select the status of ssd cache for storage pool?” but apart from that exactly as described and my Raid 10 structure re-appeared immediately. Marvellous. I needed to re-install docker and plex but that was expected. Thanks again.

Thanks for letting everyone know how you got on with it, as you’re the first person I’m aware of that has moved their drives to a new NAS.

Now we all know that it works, which is great, as I have a feeling there will be more people upgrading from Ugreen’s more entry level devices, once they’ve gotten a feel for the software and hardware. There’s so much you can do with a modern NAS and you don’t want the hardware to hold you back.

Thanks for sharing this experience :ok_hand::ok_hand:

but :

I think some docker containers will Not start as they were pulled as : x86 while your DH4300+ is arm64
so I think you need to pull thier images again !!

Hi, yes, as expected, moving to a different architecture all of that needed reconstructing but I had the experience setting up the DH so moving to the DXP has been straightforwards. Just wish that the information on migration was easier to find but again thanks to TLS.

Agreed, the Ugreen help section is awful, as it has way too strict search terms and anything closely related doesn’t bring up any results. I tried to find an answer as well and in the end, I asked in the official forum and got a link from one of the Ugreen staff to what I linked to above.

Ugreen has a lot of work to do when it comes to documentation, but they seem to think they can solve some of that with their new “ai” software, which based on early previews, isn’t really the case.
