I am planning to buy my first NAS and at the moment I am mainly looking at Synology, QNAP and UGREEN.
The hardware on the UGREEN models looks good for the price, but when I started reading I see many discussions about security. People were mentioning things like the Docker version being behind, OpenClaw , and some concerns around user permissions.
I know people on the internet sometimes exaggerate, so I’m trying to understand how much of this is genuine concern
For those of you using UGREEN NAS today, do you feel comfortable with its security, or do you think Synology and QNAP are ahead ?
It’s not like QNAP or Synology are poster boys for security, all things considered.
Having worked for QNAP I was contacted by someone working for a government agency that had some concerns about security issues. It was largely ignored by the support team and the PMs when I brought it to their attention. This is admittedly over a decade ago, but still.
Ugreen just updated Docker to a more recent build, but not the most recent one.
You can always install a third party OS, it’s quite easy to do and you’re not prevented from doing so.
I don’t expose anything Ugreen towards the internet. I also don’t use things like their remote connection solution, as that would go via servers in xina.
